영어독해연습 문장 질문좀 드릴게요 (2문장)

Studies continually show that fruits and particularly vegetables contain nutrients that help protect
us from disease and [retard/accelerate] aging
이문장에서 과일과 특히 채소들이 질병을 막아주고 그리고 노화를 지연시켜준다해서 retard가 답인데요
protect from A and B로 봐서 병을막아주고 노화의가속(accelerate aging)으로부터 막아준다 이렇게 하면 안되나요?
안된다면 disease 는 명사이고 뒤에는 동사+명사 형태여서 형태가 안맞아서 and가 저렇게 성립이안되는건가요?
그리구 Because there is less of it left, they feel more excited about the life
when they are grateful to awaken to every day
이문장에서 when이 which로 바뀌어야 한다고 하는데 the life 선행사로보고 they are grateful 이면 완전한문장인거 아닌가요?
왜 which로 바꾸어야 하는지 궁금합니다.

앞질문에서 retard 는 help에 걸리는 것으로 protect 와 병렬구조입니다. 병렬구조는 형태가 같아야 하므로 명사인 disease와는 연결될수 없는 것이죠.
뒤 질문은 about 때문입니다. when 이라면 선행사와 뒤 완전한 문장과의 결합이 자연스러워야 하는데
they are greatful the life는 자연스럽지 않죠 they are greatful about the life to awaken~이 자연스럽습니다.
about which는 when으로 교체 가능 합니다
