Extensive gestural languages were employed by many human hunting communities-for example, among the Plains Indians, who also used smoke signals. According to Homer, the victory of the Hellenes at Troy was conveyed from Ilium to Greece, a distance of some hundred miles, by a series of signal fires. The date was about 1100 B.C. However, both the repertoire of ideas and the speed with which ideas can be communicated in gestural or sign languages is limited.

Darwin pointed out that gestural languages cannot usefully be employed while our hands are otherwise occupied, or at night, or when our view of the hands is obstructed. One can imagine gestural languages being gradually supplemented and then supplanted by verbal languages -which originally may have been onomatopoeic (that is, imitative in sound of the object or action being described).

Children call dogs "bow-wows." In almost all human languages the child's word for "mother" seems imitative of the sound made inadvertently while feeding at the breast. But all of this could not have occurred without a restructuring of the brain.

갓직히 말해서 2번째 문단 해석이 어렵네요.... 글의 주제는 제스처에 대해서 뇌에서의 재해석이 없으면 한계가 있다 인가요?? 어려워 ㅠㅠ gradually verbal 에서 바뀌어간다는건 금방캐치하는데 세부내용을 닦는게 좀 껄끄럽당

예로 들어서 연기 신호를 사용하는 평원 인도인 사이에서, 호메로스에 따르면 트로이에서의 헬레네스의 승리는 일리네움에서 그리스로 일련의 봉화 신호로 인하여 수백마일의 거리를 걸쳐 나르게 되었다.

하지만 손짓이나 신호대화 (위에서 말한 봉화) 생각의 레퍼토리와 속도는 매우 제한되어있다.

때로는 손짓 언어가 점진적으로 보완적이게 되었고 이것은 아마 원래는 onomatopeioc이었던
(그러니깐, 설명되는 행동이나 물체소리를 모방하는것) 의 음성 언어로 대신되었다고 추정할수 있다. (점차 원래 주로 사용되었던 손짓 언어가 쇠퇴해간다는 뜻)

아이는 개를 바우와우라고 부르는데, "mother"이라고 부르는 인간의 언어는 우리가 젖먹이였을적에 무심코 소리의 모방으로 간주되지만, 모든 것이 뇌의 재구성없이 일어나지 않는다.(그러니깐 이 내용을 해석해보자면 mother이라고 부르는 것은 사실 문화적으로 형성된 단어가 아니라 우리가 mother라고 비슷한 소리를 낸것에서 유래되는 것)

개인적으로 이건 인문학 지식이다 보니 의학적 지식을 보는것보다 더 수월하게 해석되었네요 해석 제가 전부 한것이고 틀린거 있으면 지적 부탁드립니당.
