[진양문T]수능영어 고난도 유형들의 특징 분석(3)

오늘은 세 번째로 흔히들 말하는 paraphrase에 대한 설명과 paraphrase를 이용한 출제원리 및 빈칸 해결법을 말씀드리겠습니다.

우리 학생들이 언어(국어)영역의 고득점을 위해 독해방법론을 알 수 있는 책들, 즉 “언어의 기술”과 같은 책들을 많이 참고하듯이, 원어민 학생들도 SAT와 같은 시험에서 언어(영어)영역의 고득점을 위해 ‘Reading Methodology’ 관련 책들을 참고합니다. 그 중 가장 대표적인 책이 “Reading for Results"라고 저는 생각합니다. - 제 개인적인 생각으로는 영어학이나 영어교육한 전공자나 영어강사를 생각하는 사람이라면 꼭 봐야하는 책이라고 믿습니다. 이 책에서 paraphrase와 paraphrase의 방법론을 언급한 부분을 아래에 인용하겠습니다.

Paraphrasing Topic Sentences

Right after you finish reading a paragraph, it's easy to assume you've understood it because the author's words are still fresh in your memory. However, the real test of your understanding is whether you are able to paraphrase the topic sentence. To paraphrase means to express someone else's ideas in your own words. If you can express the topic sentence in words of your own, you can be sure that you've understood the paragraph.

위에서 말한 것처럼 paraphrase는 사실 타인의 글을 읽고 나서 그 글의 요지를 정확하게 이해하는 지의 여부를 자신에게 익숙한 표현으로 바꿔봄으로써 확인하는 기법을 말합니다. 이는 우리나라의 수능영어에서 주제/요지/제목 문제를 통해 구현되고 있습니다.

ex) 2014년 6월 평가원 글의 주제

In the nineteenth century, a decisive moment occurred when people in advertising and journalism discovered that if they framed their stories and appeals with fear, they could capture our attention. It is an emotion we find hard to resist or control, and so they constantly shifted our focus to new possible sources of anxiety: the latest health scare, the new crime wave, and endless hazards in the environment of which we were not aware. With the increasing sophistication of the media and the haunting quality of the imagery, they have been able to give us the feeling that we are fragile creatures in an environment full of danger ― even though we live in a world infinitely safer and more predictable than anything our ancestors knew. With their help, our anxieties have only increased.

위와 같이

people in advertising and journalism => media

framed their stories and appeals with fear => exploitation of anxiety

의 관계를 알아내는 것이 수능의 특징입니다. 즉, 출제자가 원전을 읽고서 만들어낸 paraphrasing들 중에서 가장 적절한 것을 찾아내는 것입니다.

이것을 빈칸추론에서 출제할 때의 원리는 원저자의 paraphrase를 수험생들이 정확하게 이해하고 있는지를 물어보는 것입니다.

원저: Preventing Earthquake Disasters: The Grand Challenge in Earthquake Engineering: A Research Agenda for the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) (2004)

Lifeline infrastructures are vital systems that support a nation's economy and quality of life. Modern economies rely on the ability to move goods, people, and information safely and reliably. Adding to their importance is that many of the lifeline systems serve vital roles in disaster recovery. Consequently, it is of the utmost importance to government, business, and the public at large that the flow of services provided by a nation's infrastructure continues unimpeded in the face of a broad range of natural and technological hazards. The linkage between systems are services is critical to any discussion of infrastructure. Although it is the performance of the hardware (i.e., the highways, pipes, and transmission lines) that is of immediate concern following an earthquake, it is actually the loss of services that these systems provide that is the real loss to the public. Therefore, a high priority in protecting these systems from hazards is ensuring ____________________.

① an early alarm system for economic crises

② the durability and stability of transmission lines

③ the continuity, or at least the rapid restoration, of service

④ a prompt mobilization of experts for disaster control

⑤ the maintenance and expansion of lifeline systems

=> 원전의 필자는 이 글의 요지를 4번째 줄에서 Consequently 이하에서 먼저 서술하고는, 이를 독자의 이해를 돕기 위해, 마지막 두 줄에서 paraphrase하고 있고, 이것을 평가원이 문제로 다음과 같이 구현한 것입니다.
